Problem
The same question, in a new operation
What a route costs depends on which vehicle runs it. Change the axle count and the tariff changes with it, which is why a single “route cost” figure misleads.
Planning has the same problem: the shortest route and the cheapest route are usually not the same. Taking the motorway is sometimes cheap because it saves fuel and hours, and sometimes expensive because of the tolls.

- Costing
- Routes are priced against current motorway and bridge tariffs, itemised rather than totalled.
- Vehicle-class-specific route planning
- The route is planned for the class of vehicle that will run it. Between the same two points, different vehicle classes can produce a different route and a different cost.
- Presented by toll cost
- The route arrives with its toll cost attached: what each option costs, and the gap between the motorway and the alternative. Whoever decides, decides while seeing it.
